catalonia-series

The Spanish film ‘Los Abrazos Rosas’ by Pedro Almodovar was nothing more than a far off cause to make a small series of paintings which I called “Catalonian Interiors”. In four of them the crucifix may be an important part, being an archaic symbol just like the circle or the Buddhist swastika are. To me a cross is not primarily a Christian symbol, but I use it more for this archaic form, just like Antoni Tàpies does, although one may find a ‘shadow’ of the crucified Christ….

‘Mateo’ is the name of one the protagonists in the film, but in my paintings I gave the name Mateo its own story as well as a more specific region: Catalonia instead of Spain, although not for any other reason than the sound of the syllables of the word ‘Catalonia’…. In this small series of paintings there are two, which are the first of my paintings of which the frames too become part of the artworks.
